Breaking up is never easy. It can leave you feeling lost, heartbroken, and unsure of how to move forward. But just because it's challenging doesn't mean you have to stay stuck in the pain. As therapists and breakup experts, the most common question we hear from clients and followers is: "How do you get over a breakup?". Here are 7 actionable steps to help you get over a breakup and start the journey toward healing. The steps outlined here on how to get over a breakup are addressed extensively in our book BreakUp & BreakOut, which we created as a guide to help people healing from a breakup to not just get over a breakup, but thrive!
  1. Allow Yourself to Feel: It's okay to feel sad, angry, or even relieved after a breakup. Give yourself permission to experience these emotions fully. Suppressing them will only prolong the healing process.
  2. Lean on Support: Reach out to friends and family who can provide comfort and understanding during this difficult time. Talking about your feelings can help you gain perspective and feel less alone.
  3. Focus on Self-Care: Take care of your physical and emotional well-being by prioritizing self-care. Eat nutritious foods, exercise regularly, get enough sleep, and engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation.
  4. Reflect on the Relationship: Reflect on what you've learned from the relationship and why it ended. Use this insight to grow and evolve as a person. Remember that every experience, even painful ones, can teach us valuable lessons.
  5. Set Boundaries: If possible, establish boundaries with your ex to give yourself space to heal. This may include limiting contact or unfollowing them on social media. Creating distance can help you focus on yourself and your own healing journey.
  6. Stay Busy: Keep yourself occupied with activities and hobbies that keep your mind engaged. Whether it's pursuing a passion project, learning something new, or spending time with loved ones, staying busy can help distract you from dwelling on the breakup.
  7. Seek Professional Help if Needed: If you're struggling to cope with the breakup or experiencing persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, don't hesitate to seek support from a therapist or counselor. They can provide guidance and tools to help you navigate this challenging time.
Getting over a breakup takes time, patience, and self-compassion. By allowing yourself to feel, seeking support, and focusing on self-care, you can gradually heal and move forward with your life. Remember that you're not alone, and brighter days are ahead. If you're currently working to heal from a breakup, we invite you to explore our book BreakUp & BreakOut to help your healing journey
